Reaction and Statements of Support

burned GA 1-Mahdi

Following the news of Gaza's Ark being burned down while Gaza is being attacked by the Israeli occupying forces, many of our supporters have sent messages of encouragement. Here is a sample of those messages we have received in the last few hours.

As we assess the next steps, we thank everyone for their unconditional solidarity not only with us, but with the Palestinians of Gaza at this time of suffering and incomprehensible destruction of lives.

You must leave it as a testimony to what was done, in the way that the
British left gunshot holes in the side of one of its museums after
WWII and the way Berlin left remnants of a damaged church.

The Ark can be a museum, with posters explaining its story and the
many hands and hearts that were determined to provide dignity where a
privileged entity was determined to take dignity away.

As Israeli government arrogance has grown, perhaps it is necessary to
build below-ground shelters.

I am so distressed by what I have seen of Israeli cruelty and the
failure of the U.S. to correct U.S. government behavior. I am reminded
of how it was in the 'hood when I first lived in a red-lined place in
the 80's. People had to work on their houses at night and make them
look terrible in the front, to protect themselves from harassment by
government.

I feel a bit arrogant myself to send these thoughts to you. Please
know that it is because I want to help, and my heart and my prayers
are with you.

not surprised that Israel targeted your ship – but so saddened and angry too.  I know Israel is playing mind games with Palestinians in Gaza, trying to cause them to feel totally hopeless and demoralized.  So please – stay the course.  We have to be the hope and joy, so that the people of Gaza can recover from this brutal onslaught.
Peace,
P.R.

This is outrageous and upsetting. I applaud your efforts and would so like to see the project go forward. Wonder if there’s any way to sue Israel for damages – even if that is just a symbolic action? In any case, I remain a supporter and will watch for news of your next steps.

Salaam, Shalom, Peace,

M.L.

Dear Gaza’s Ark Committee,

You are completely correct in your assessment that it is the peaceful (economic, educational, social) projects that show the humanity of the Palestinians and their cause that the Israelis fear most. Better they should demonize the Palestinians, from their point of view. Yet what they want for themselves (an independent and recognized sovereign country), they are not willing to grant to others.  So they continue to slowly strangle the Palestinian people. One can understand  that the only choice left open from extinction is what Hamas is doing, unless you can come with successful non-violent approaches such as you are trying. Such strategies actually worked for Ghandi and Martin Luther King, and they do catch the attention of the world – like the UN Resolution that the Palestinians have a moral right to pursue the status of a nation. Please don’t give up or you will end up like the American Indians of 150 years ago. But looking at what is happening on the ground, over the last 60 years, one can’t say we are closer to a real resolution. It could be if Palestinian authorities (Hamas?) could grant to Israel the right to exist, then Israel might do the same for Palestinians. Someone has to have the courage to break the ice here, maybe your committee can. Keep up the good work, and keep me on your donor list.

H.M.

Sad but probably inevitable.
One thing it does make clear that assault on Gaza is not all about defence
Hamas it seems to me is using Israel's strength against it. Its overwhelming power and disproportionate response will only continue to undermine its claims and support and draw public attention to what is really going on. Hamas has no soldiers blood to shed only that of civilians which may in the end be more powerful.
Israel is showing it is muscle bound and not clear headed.

Dear Gaza Ark,

of all the news and nihilism that has been reported recently this email somehow made me feel more depressed and frustrated. It seems that Israel not only wants to punish Palestinians and reduce them to misery and poverty but it wants to extinguish hope or any  chance of having contact with the world. I am thoroughly bemused and angry with such a nihilistic attitude. I am also angry that my Government, the British Government, continues to defend Israel's right to defend itself with no mention of the rights of the imprisoned Palestinians.

I have supported your work before and I will in the future. You are great fighters for justice and fairness.

Regards

Sad photos of the Ark burning, but I suppose we should be honoured that the Israelis felt so threatened by the Ark that they attacked it while it was high and dry and harmless on the beach.

So sorry – it may pale in significance to lives lost, but Gaza's Ark is a great symbol of hope, and I do hope it is still repairable. This is a time of great grieving, and prayers that the extremity of the abuses this time will lead to change.

It amazes me how the world has watched for way too long the daily suffering of the Palestinian people under the Israeli occupation, & still the so called leaders of nations, but particularly the US, continues to allow this to continue.  I'm especially deeply disappointed of our current president, who has the power to intervene for the good of all. All this power Mr. President, but you chose to be a politician, not a compassionate, wise @ courageous person, how very sad.

I don't know if you'll receive this, but I am so saddened to hear this. When will these factions – on both sides – learn to settle their differences rationally? They owe it to their children and grandchildren; they must not inherit their forefathers' war.

I'm so sorry.

I am a New York Jew, A retired lawyer and someone who is offended beyond description at the callousness of the Israeli disregard for the lives of the residents of Gaza. Please let me know how I can help either by a cash contribution or by lending my moral support. I was a loyal supporter of Israel for many years until it showed the madness for land and control we are now witnessing. Their deceit in blaming the kidnappings on Hamas with no proof offered and their taking revenge on the group for the supposed alleged actions of a few are remindful of the Nazis in Russia and at Lidice. I am shamed by the news from Gaza and am with you in spirit.

The failure of the media to do more than parrot the Israeli line and propaganda is perhaps the greatest wound to the American civic discourse and independence in my lifetime. We feed and nourish the very anti American sentiment among so many Muslims that make us all fearful in our daily lives yet cannot put the puzzle together except as the anti Muslim fanatics and demagogues would have us do it. Not more than 60 years ago the government and media could still attempt objectivity witness Eisenhower at Suez but now of course they are entirely cowed by the power and the financial strength of the Israel lobby and its supporters. These are bad times indeed. Good luck to you on your future efforts.

We need a campaign to press Obama into action.  Unfortunately, Obama and the rest of "our" government thinks Israel is an ally – more likely, afraid they'll lose votes if they don't go along with their repression.  We have to send "our" government a message that they must stop the destruction of Palestine or lose our votes.

Thanks for standing up to the cowardly Israeli murderers of children. I heard a report on NPR earlier today that made me want to slap them; they framed the current crisis as a "war", and started the report with rocket attacks against Israel, with the Israeli bombings called an "answer", even though their own numbers for the week's death toll was reported as zero from the Hamas rockets, and I think, 79 Palestinians from the Israeli bombs. NPR sucks ass.
