Help repair Gaza’s Ark after the sabotage

When our marine engineer first sent us the list of repairs needed for Gaza’s Ark as a result of the sabotage* of April 29, we were shocked at how long it was. The amount of extra work to be done is huge. In addition, the price of materials is now much higher than it was before Egypt closed the border with Gaza and destroyed the tunnels. Fiberglass, for example, is now four times the price.

Remember the Mavi. Support the Ark!

Four years ago, six boats set off from various ports around the Mediterranean with the goal of breaking Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza. There would have been more if some boats hadn’t been sabotaged. Six hundred passengers from many different countries were united in their determination to help free a people who have lived under Occupation for over 40 years, with all the misery that that entails. While still in international waters, they were boarded in the early morning of 31 May by armed Israeli commandos who came in speed boats, or descended from helicopters overhead, shooting as they went.

Gaza’s Ark gets help from an old bus!

In particular we would like to thank those who have funded almost the entire cost of the generator as well as the cost of all the letters to be painted on Gaza's Ark. We will circulate pictures of the name being painted on the port, starboard and stern of the boat as soon as this has been completed.

Gaza’s Ark now registered: Needs lettering, generator and more!

logo for mailing to listWe are pleased to announce that we are now in full possession of the Ark! Having paid the final instalment of the boat purchase, in January, we have now registered Gaza’s Ark in the name of our organization. Thank you to everyone who helped to pay the $85,000 for the fishing boat that we are converting into a cargo vessel. Completing the registration was a very special moment for all of us.

Now that we own the boat and it is registered, one of the next tasks is to paint the name on the boat. GAZA’S ARK will be painted on both sides of the boat as well as the back, along with our logo. The letters will be enormous, and will be painted on using stencils. Would you like to sponsor a letter? If so, please see list below.

Got friends?

logo for mailing to listWe need your help, and theirs!

Thank you to everyone who donated in response to our recent appeal.  You helped us raise a significant portion of the amount needed to fund the electrical work.

Many of the donors, however, were people who have given before. We don't want to keep asking the same people over and over again, so this time we are asking you to help in a completely different way. We still need another $80,000 before we can set sail, and we need to tell as many people as possible about our project to generate even more interest worldwide.

Gaza’s Ark returns to the water – the value of small donors

Dear Friends:

We are pleased to announce that Gaza's Ark is now back in the water*, having had its hull thoroughly cleaned, overhauled and painted. Well done to the boat building team in Gaza!

You can see photos in our photo album and the video below.

Next on the refurbishing list comes the plumbing and electrical work.

Gaza’s Ark Returning to the Water

logo for mailing to listDear Friends:

We are pleased to announce that over the past year, thanks to your generous donations, we have raised over $200,000 towards Gaza’s Ark, which we are preparing to sail from Gaza against the Israeli illegal blockade.

To complete the next stage of the boat we need to raise $20,000 in the next two weeks - please help by making a donation here.

Donate so we can finish what we started, together

Due to the dedication of Palestinian workers in Gaza and your generous support and in spite of difficulties obtaining building supplies because of the Israeli blockade and the closure of the border crossing with Egypt at Rafah, the work on Gaza’s Ark remains on schedule for a Spring 2014 (Autumn 2014 for Australia) sailing.

Last month, we pulled Gaza’s Ark out of the water and we have carried out the following works in dry dock:

  • checked the under water level of the hull, which was then treated and anti-fouling was applied
  • completed maintenance of the propeller and rudder.

See photos of work done while boat on land.

The boat is due to re-enter the water shortly and we will then commence the next phase of the renovation, including:

  • concluding work relating to the hull and the main  cabin
  • building two bulkheads below deck
  • carrying out some of the electromechanical works.

Please continue to help us as we prepare Gaza’s Ark to sail against the blockade.  You can donate towards:

Gaza’s Ark will sail with Palestinian products on board. Make your purchase now (minimum purchase $500 Canadian). Visit www.gazaark.org/products for more information.

Thank you again for your ongoing support.  With your assistance and the work of our international partners, especially the Palestinians in Gaza, we have made this project a reality.

With your support, Gaza’s Ark to sail in 2014

Dear friends,

As we enter what is a ‘season of giving’ for many of our supporters and as we approach the New Year, please consider making a donation to support the Palestinians of Gaza via Gaza’s Ark, www.gazaark.org/donate/

In May this year, with the help of thousands of individuals and organizations we purchased a 25 meter long fishing boat in Gaza. In the last seven months we have employed tens of local workers who have skillfully worked to refurbish it in readiness to sail out of Gaza and challenge the blockade. You can see pictures and videos of Gaza’s Ark on our website http://www.gazaark.org/category/ark-photo-album/

Despite the Israeli Government maintaining its illegal blockade, and the decision of the Egyptian authorities to all but close the border crossings at Rafah, we have continued with our work.

Last month we organized the sailing of mini Arks in Gaza, raising several thousand dollars, but more importantly it brought great joy and hope to many local children who sailed boats made in Gaza, sponsored by people like you from all around the world.

In 2014, working with partners in Palestine, Australia, Canada, South Africa, USA and across Europe, Gaza's Ark will sail across the Mediterranean Sea carrying Palestinian export goods to sell to the international community.

Gaza’s Ark and its ‘trade not aid’ strategy will challenge the illegal blockade from the ‘inside out’, supporting the Palestinians of Gaza to rebuild their economy through outbound trade.

Gaza’s Ark is supported by many Nobel Laureates, politicians, writers, artists and public figures, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Noam Chomsky, Mairead Maguire, Shirin Ebadi, Tawakkol Karman, Alice Walker, Denis J. Halliday, Hans C. von Sponeck and Rigoberta Menchú Tum (see www.gazaark.org/2012/12/02/our-supporters/) as well as by many organizations and individuals like you.

With your help we have already raised nearly $200,000. Please help us raise the remaining monies or buy goods from Palestinian producers www.gazaark.org/products/ that we will be exporting on Gaza’s Ark.

In addition to donating, you can buy:

*  ‘Symbolic Shares’ in Gaza’s Ark for $50 (Canadian) each.
    *   Materials and wages necessary for refurbishment in units of $100 (Canadian).
    *   Palestinian export products (minimum purchase of $500 Canadian) http://www.gazaark.org/products/

Thanks again for supporting Gaza's Ark in 2013. Your generosity today will help make this project a reality and make a real difference in the lives of people in Gaza.

We thank you for your ongoing support. Wishing you Happy Holidays and all the best in 2014.

Sponsor a mini-Ark now

and help bring attention to the suffering of children living under the blockade in Gaza

Mini ArkOn November 30th, hundreds of Palestinian children will be reaching out to the world from the confines of the ever-tightening Israeli blockade of Gaza.

In anticipation of the spring launch of Gaza's Ark, they will gather on the Mediterranean shore with mini-Arks, 40-cm long wooden model boats representing Gaza's Ark (see photo), and send them off into the sea.

  • These mini-Arks will send a symbolic message of defiance against an illegal blockade, made worse by Egypt's crackdown on the Rafah crossing and tunnels, which is destroying their childhood and ruining their future.
  • Their message of hope will be made possible with the support of sponsors like you all over the world
  • Be one of those who sponsor a mini-Ark for $50, or co-sponsor one for $25. Your name (or your organization’s name) and the name of your country will be written on the mini-Ark you sponsor.

Part of your contribution will cover the cost of materials and assembly of the mini-Arks. The rest will help finance Gaza's Ark and its direct action "Trade not Aid" mission against the blockade.

29 November Update

Thank you to all those who have sponsored mini Arks. The children of Gaza are looking forward to launching close to 200 mini Arks on November 30th.

If you still would like to make a donation, please do so by clicking the "Thermometer" button on the home page. Thanks.
