Products

Following the targeting and destruction of Gaza’s Ark we are suspending new orders of goods until we can complete consultations (with producers in Gaza and buyers worldwide) about next steps in our campaign to challenge the blockade through trade not aid. Please be assured that all of the monies paid for products are being given to the producers in Gaza, regardless of whether the products are still available for export or if they have been destroyed in the latest Israeli aggression.

Why buy from Abbassan Cooperative for Medicinal Herbs?

Abbassan Cooperative for Medicinal Herbs (Abbassan) is a part of the Cooperative Association for Savings and Liability, with 67 women from the village of Abbassan.

This cooperative cultivates and produces spices including thyme (za’atar/zattar), sage, chamomile and dugga. The women meet weekly in the cooperative center where they learn about the latest agricultural skills as well as sharing life experiences.

Salma Abu Mostafa (coordinator):

“The project began as an individual initiative in 2001. Due to increased demand we had to get more machines and move to larger premises, In turn, this has enabled us to give more new chances for women in our region to work and earn a fair income.”

Prior to the Israeli blockade, zattar used to be made in and transported from the West Bank. Abbassan is now encouraging rural women in Gaza to cultivate zattar in their farms and to manufacture it using machines in the cooperative.

Salma Abu Mostafa (coordinator):

“One of the worst aspects of the Israeli blockade is that it has closed all of our export doors from the Strip. Despite the obstructions, we will keep working to make our Palestinian traditional products. We are looking forward to more chances to export our pure Palestinian products across the world. Gaza's Ark encourages us that we will find new windows of hope."

Why buy this product from Maftoul of Green Farms

Founded in 2002, Maftoul of Green Farms is a women’s cooperative in the village of Swarha, south of Nusirat city in the middle of the Gaza Strip. Ten women are directly involved in maftoul (Palestinian couscous) processing.

Fatima Abu Swereh (Supervisor):

''When we first started producing maftoul we transferred it from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank and then exported it to Italy. We were producing more than 300kg of maftoul each day and we were financially secure. Everything changed though when the Israeli blockade began.  Now our work has totally stopped and with it the taste of life and dignity."

This project producing maftoul has given a great chance to four Palestinian women to work, to help their families and to have an active role in the society. Due to the blockade they have been left without jobs and any kind of income.

Fatima is a Palestinian refugee. Originally from Ashdod, she and her husband, who was a freedom fighter, were exiled in 1967, from Gaza to Libya by Israel. In 1999, they managed to return and set about making a new beginning. Fatima has a large extended family, consisting of three married sons and three daughters. About 25 people live in a two-storey house, with most of their incomes being derived from the production of maftoul.

Fatima hopes that the Gaza's Ark project can help her to export her products to the world and will create more job opportunities to other Palestinian women too.

Why buy this product from Palestine Women's Union – Gaza

Palestine Women's Union – Gaza (PWU) was formed in 1964 and has three branches. Its aims include lifting social, cultural, health and economic standards of women. It established a kindergarten in the main centre of Gaza in 1964 and subsequently opened three other kindergartens across the Gaza Strip, all of which are equipped with contemporary educational tools and qualified female teachers.

Laila Kabariti (representative of the Board of Directors):

“We were hoping to open new branches in Jabalia Refugee camp, Deir El Balah and Abassan, but due to the severe blockade and lack of resources we were instead forced to close branches in Rafah and Biet Hanoun, which have badly affected many Palestinian women and have created more unemployment in our society."

With qualified trainers and modern machinery, PWU has helped hundreds of Palestinian women to improve their economic situation, through workshops and courses in languages, sewing, knitting, crochet, tricot and embroidering. These courses provide a chance for women to work and receive a fair income. PWU also creates opportunities for women to bring products made at home, for sale at or through the main centre. PWU used to export to Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as well as selling to people on holiday in the Gaza Strip.

Laila Qrenawi (supervisor, embroidery section):

“Since the Israeli blockade has been tightened further, it now costs too much money to buy tools, thread and fabric and we have been prevented from exporting our products. In turn, this has caused us to reduce our production rate pushing many women out of work.”I am a Palestinian refugee from Jaffa, living in Al-shati refugee camp. My father died when I was a baby and my mother when I was young too. I wanted to go to college but couldn’t afford the fees. I joined PWU and did a course in embroidering and then started working for it, which enabled me to further my education – gaining a diploma in secretary and public relations, but as importantly, learning to develop my own life skills."

Why buy this product from  Al-Ahliya Association for the Development of Palms and Dates?

Fruit and palm trees  are a source of food and family income for many Palestinians in Gaza. By purchasing these naturally-sweet, preservative-free products you are contributing hope and dignity to farmers and their families.  The Al-Ahliya association in Deir Balah supports families who grow and market dates by helping them to market their products.

Why buy this product from the National Association of Olive Tree Protection?

The National Association of Olive Tree Protection is a co-operative of small Palestinian olive farmers that produce olive oil. Olive oil production is an ancient tradition on which 80,000 Palestinian families still rely for their livelihoods.

These families face growing economic hardship due to Israeli access restrictions to their olive groves as well as widespread uprooting, destruction and theft of the trees themselves. Since 1967, Israeli authorities have been responsible for uprooting over 800,000 Palestinian olive trees.

You can help keep the ancient tradition of Palestinian olive farming alive by purchasing the Association’s olive oil through Gaza’s Ark.

Why buy this product from Palestinian Association for Development and Heritage Protection?

The Palestinian Association for Development and Heritage Protection (PADHP) is a not for profit, non-government organisation, that was established in July 2002.

PADHP’s main aims are to develop Palestinian communities in marginalised areas and protect and promote Palestinian cultural heritage.

PADHP works to transform the community from a consumer community to a productive community, especially amongst women and young people by helping develop their abilities and to create jobs for them within their local communities.

Amongst the workers at PADHP is Samera Qarmot, a Palestinian refugee from Der Sneed, who lives in Jablaia refugee camp. Samera’s income helps her to take care of her extended family.

Why buy this product from El Sawaf carpets?

The El Sawaf Carpet factory has operated in the Gaza Strip for over 100 years. Prior to the blockade the majority of their carpets where exported to Israel, the West Bank and Jordan. Now, as a result of the blockade, Mahmoud El Sawaf has had to close his factory and lay off his entire workforce – 15 full time employees. The business is now run out of a small workshop and the family struggle to keep the business going.

“The Palestinian people do not need aid, they need their freedom. We have the ability to make many unique products that would be competitive on the international market, we just need the opportunity” – says Mahmoud El Sawaf. Prior to the blockade 500 hand looms and 60 machine looms where in operation in the Gaza Strip. Now  due to the blockade there are only 10 hand looms and 2 machine looms in operation in the Strip.

You can help stop this decline in carpet manufacturing in the besieged Gaza Strip by purchasing a carpet from El Sawaf Carpets – this purchase will not only support the El Sawaf family, but build hope through the entire Strip!
